The world is just awesome. Go Discover it!
That day, this channel!
Television has come a long way from the days of Ramayana, Mahabharata, DD. I still remember racing to my uncle’s house to watch “Guinness book of world records”, because the power would go out at 9PM in our locality. Then came STAR Television and the rest is history.
Explosion of content is unbelievable, we now have unlimited access to the best content in the world. The creative genius of human beings to entertain and educate are right there with just a flick of a button.
There are entire channels dedicated to Travelling & Living, Animals, Science, History, Engineering, Human Psychology, Dedicated children channels, sports of all dimensions and more. Our ancestors would never believe that our generation can create such beauty or bring home such beauty through our TV set. This is awesome!
Crap!
Through all this creativity and wonder, there is of-course, a lot of junk coming in too. Yes! I’m talking about the soap operas, reality shows where women tear out each other’s hair, Big Brother, TV serials about family conflicts, “Dance” & “Singing” shows which pitch a 5-year-old against other 5-year-old
Our brilliant media houses were quick to catch on these “TV programs” and are using all means to shove them down our brains. They are hitting it where it hurts, our hearts. They are cashing on the negative human emotions manifested in an Indian adult who is helplessly caught in the hypocrisy of our society.
If you haven’t noticed, look closer, humans incline towards negative emotions – jealousy, anger, betrayal, sorrow, desperation, sins. It’s far easier becoming angry from smiling, then to come back to smiling from anger. Our channels understand this too well.
I love to hate
I absolutely detest TV serials, especially regional channel programs. Programs from Indian regional channels cause intellectual genocide of Indian minds. But then some young Indians are drawn to these, in-spite of having access to world – WWW, English channels, Hollywood, Books etc.
It is not that these programs are bad, they are actually ‘Horrible’.
When asked ‘Why they waste time on this crap?’, they actually justify, saying – it is history, this is knowledge, I was tired, I just wanted to watch something relaxing. WoW! now they are using their intelligence to cleverly argue in support of this “junk”.
Now imagine the plight of the other millions of Indians – housewives, middle class families and the poor of our country, who don’t have a choice. They never had a chance. They are caught in this gross mindless nonsense.
They never knew, they are the frogs in the well, caught staring at the murk, rarely craning their necks to watch the beautiful sky above and the amazing world outside their walls. Just a flick of your thumb, that’s it!
Thank god for local language dubbing of Discovery channel 🙂
Hope!
But do not despair, this is just a temporary phase. Our media is still in an infant state, our generation will not just sit idle and let the creativity go waste. Out of this murk, the young shall rise to showcase their potential to bring quality content. There are more Cyrus Broacha’s out there 😉
