I overheard Abhi saying that he was really bored with his daily job and the lack of time.
Spending time on your passion(s) everyday will energize your body, stimulate your mind, makes you creative, serves your purpose for wanting to live. This is the Pursuit of Happiness.
Most of us in the 9-5 job group will not find enough time during the weekday to pursue our passions, explore our creativity or spend quality time with ourselves or with our loved ones.
90 minutes of passion time
We have 24 hours in a day. This is a hard/immovable fact.
|Required Activity||Hours required or spent|
There it was – 90 minutes in the pursuit of happiness. Thats it 😦
Abhi has just an hour and half to live his life as he really wants to.
But wait it gets worse, this 90 minutes comes out of a very hard and disciplined schedule (as seen above), a careful balance of time-boxing the mandatory activities.
The following have low value but these are also part of our life
- 20 minute useless phone call(s).
- online chat.
- watching mindless TV.
- movie which really sucks.
- buying something on your way to home.
- staring at walls/orkut scraps/ facebook updates/farmville and more.
Now factor the probability of these things getting into your day and your precious 90 minutes vanishes.
The GF factor
Fortunately, Abhi is still single (Unfortunately I had to use Fortunately). Although not a day goes by, when he doesn’t dream about having a girl friend, it is completely impractical for him.
So Abhi is going to get a girl friend and then give up his last 90 minutes. This is now hopeless! (Solution in Next Post)
It is hard to squeeze out time from the mandatory activities
|Eating food||Maybe slightly|
The best and hardest solution
Some of you may have caught it early on while reading this post.
Work Place – 9 hours
Are you in this job for just the money?
This is the BIGGEST chunk of time in your day. But it was just categorized into a timed and necessary activity like Sleep or Eating Food.
What if your passion is in your job?
The balance time will shoot up from 1.5 hours to 10.5 hours! Now you are easily on your way to living your dreams.
If you were me, you wouldn’t even know what’s your greatest passion. And to actually make it your career – almost impossible for most of us.
Don’t get used to the Stink
Do you know the worst thing that can happen to you?
You will get used to this!
Anyone in Hyderabad who has been to the Hussain Sagar lake to enjoy the gardens, will know that the lake STINKS.
But you stay there for a while and you get used to the stink. Soon you will stop noticing.
There are a lot of mundane, mind numbing, boring jobs out there.
Stick around for too long and you will be stuck there for life.
So promise yourself this
- You will NOT get used to a boring/mundane job.
- You will try your best to make it interesting, creative and fun.
- You will, at the same time, make excellent use of your spare time (1.5 to 3 hours) in the pursuit of happiness.
But whatever your situation don’t just take things they are. Try to understand yourself, learn ideas, read books to learn new ways to improve your life.
There’s got to be a way!
What are your ideas/tips for following your passions or hobbies?
(This post is about the lack of time. So I edited out half the words from the original draft to save your time)
